Illusionary Patterns: Portrait Paintings by Lee Wagstaff
Published Feb 12, 2024
British artist Lee Wagstaff intertwines patterns and optical illusions to craft incredible portraits. In his own words:
“A recurring theme in my work is pattern, I am drawn to patterns that predict and perhaps defy cosmic order.”
At first glance, Lee’s painted portraits seem to be composed of simple, repetitive patterns, but upon closer inspection, these patterns reveal themselves to be complex optical illusions. Take a step back and the seemingly abstract designs suddenly transform into identifiable faces and figures right before your eyes.
