Illuminated Fields: Light Art Installations by Barry Underwood
Published Apr 25, 2023
Barry Underwood is an American artist whose work stands at the intersection of photography, environmental art and sculpture.
Barry’s practice revolves around the relationship between humans and the environment we inhabit. He creates staged light installations in natural landscapes that have been affected by destructive human behavior to provide a commentary on environmental issues.
His creative process is both meticulous and experimental, starting with hours of location search, talking with community members, learning about the location’s ecological and social histories, and studying satellite imagery. He then uses these landscapes as a stage for his ephemeral illuminated sculptures, that are ultimately document as photographs.
Barry Underwood’s photographs undoubtedly make us pause, think and contemplate the relationship we have with our natural environment, reminding us of the vital importance of preserving our environment in all its beauty.
