Gravitas: Hyper-Realistic Rug Paintings by Antonio Santin
Published Feb 21, 2023
Antonio Santin is an artist known for his incredibly realistic paintings of textiles, and his latest series, ‘Gravitas’, is no exception. The series features crumpled rugs that are painted using trompe l’oeil techniques to create a stunning visual effect, giving the impression that the paintings are three-dimensional objects rather than flat artworks on a canvas.
“Santin juxtaposes flattened planes with tangible forms carved by light and shadow to create a continuous perceptual dialogue in each work.”
Santin manages to capture every detail with precision, including how light reflects off of the folds, wrinkles and textures in each painting. This attention to detail makes it difficult for onlookers to believe that they’re looking at a painting instead of an actual rug.
You can check out his previous series here, or follow him on Instagram for more of his incredible work.
