From Scratchboard to Screen: The Art of Gary Alphonso
Published May 29, 2025
Gary Alphonso is a Toronto-based illustrator whose work blends classic technique with a modern edge. He got his start studying illustration at Sheridan College and later honed his abilities at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Drawn to the detailed look of early 20th-century wood engravings, Gary eventually found his artistic home in the world of scratchboard. As time went on, he brought that scratchboard style into the digital space, expanding its creative range while preserving the tactile, handcrafted feel that defines his work.
His portfolio encompasses advertising, editorial illustrations and book publishing, marked by a versatility that allows him to adapt across formats without losing his distinct voice. Throughout his career, his ability to merge precision with expressive detail has earned him recognition from respected names like Applied Arts, Communication Arts, and 3×3 Magazine.
