Faceless Wanderers & Endless Horizons: The Surreal Paintings of Tim Storrier

Published Nov 3, 2026

Australian artist Tim Storrier has spent decades transforming vast, desolate landscapes into extraordinary scenes filled with mystery, symbolism and surreal imagery. Born in Sydney in 1949, Tim studied at the National Art School and developed a distinctive painting style that combines meticulous realism with dreamlike narratives, often exploring themes of isolation, identity and the passage of time.

His paintings are dominated by spectacular skies, with dramatic cloud formations stretching across endless desert plains. Within these expansive environments, strange scenes unfold, populated by abandoned furniture, scattered possessions and mysterious travelers. A recurring character is a faceless wanderer dressed in a weathered suit and hat, carrying an assortment of painting supplies and personal belongings. This enigmatic figure suggests an ongoing journey, both physical and psychological, through landscapes where reality and imagination collide.

Tim’s celebrated career includes winning the prestigious Archibald Prize in 2012 for his unconventional self-portrait The Histrionic Wayfarer (after Bosch), along with two Sulman Prizes and an Order of Australia for his contributions to art. His work is represented in major collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
