Face Off: Abstract Portraits by Crtomir Just & Matej Koncan
Published Jan 9, 2026
Face Off is a striking collaborative series by 3D artist and art director Crtomir Just and musician Matej Koncan that explores identity in an increasingly digitized and disconnected world. Framed as a meditation on what’s human and what’s artificially made, the project asks a simple but unsettling question, if AI becomes human, will we be artificial?
The series presents a collection of neon-soaked abstract portraits where humanoid faces dissolve into their surroundings. Facial features emerge and fade through soft gradients, glowing edges and blurred transitions, creating figures that feel present but unstable at the same time. Color plays a central role here, with saturated greens, magentas, blues and oranges bleeding across forms, blurring the boundary between subject and environment.
Alongside still 3D renders, Face Off also includes short animated clips that pair Crtomir’s visuals with Matej’s atmospheric soundscapes. The slow motion and ambient audio amplify the sense of unease and introspection, turning each portrait into a study of perception, personality and what it might take to hold onto our humanity as the future gets more synthetic.
