Fabric Museum: A Rebrand & Art Installation Project by Jocelyn Zhao

Published Sep 25, 2024

The Fabric Museum has recently unveiled a new brand identity crafted by Jocelyn Zhao, a New York-based graphic designer currently working at Google Creative Lab. The identity draws inspiration from the revolutionary Jacquard loom and revolves around the idea of bridging the realms of traditional weaving and cutting-edge technology.

At the core of this transformation is a dynamic brand that encapsulates the museum’s journey from fabric to a diverse media landscape. A variable logo system and a bespoke typeface form the backbone of this identity, ingeniously integrating the essence of weaving with contemporary design. The variable identity takes form with the “F Generator,” an interactive logo generator tool developed by Jocelyn. The software allows users to customize and output their own personalized versions of the museum’s logo.

But one of the most interesting aspects of the project is the “TextLoom” installation, which turns the weaving process into a large-scale interactive experience. The installation features a tabletop tray that resembles a weaving shuttle. This shuttle is paired with code and can be used to transmit messages through a generative typography system. The custom typeface and sound-reactive typewriter tool turn sound frequencies into unique visual outputs, making each interaction unique.
