The AYANEO Flip DS could be the Premium Nintendo DS style handheld we’ve been waiting for

Published Nov 1, 2023

After a series of recent leaks, AYANEO has confirmed the rumors of an upcoming dual-screen handheld, reminiscent of the highly popular Nintendo DS and 3DS.

Details on the device are still scarce, but this new Windows gaming handheld is rumored to include a 7″ screen as its main display, which is expected to support a refresh rate of 120Hz. Based on previous reports, the device will be powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor, paired with Radeon 780M integrated graphics, which should deliver plenty of power for AAA gaming.

In the aesthetics department, this new device looks very sleek and minimalistic, in true AYANEO fashion. We just wish the bottom screen was slightly bigger. It will be interesting to see how the company actually utilizes this secondary screen. If implemented well, this has the potential to become a truly useful component for tasks like system navigation, chat windows, save state management and game switching. However, there is also the possibility that it may end up being an unnecessary gimmick. Time will tell.

When it comes to emulation, however, systems like the Nintendo DS, 3DS and even the Wii U could definitely benefit from this unique dual-screen form factor, assuming the bottom display is indeed a touchscreen.

The limited number of images currently available show an all-white model with recessed asymmetrical analog sticks, a cross-style D-Pad, standard face buttons and an assortment of additional buttons. Among these extra buttons is one that looks like a fingerprint sensor.

The AYANEO Flip DS will be launched as part of the upcoming Flip lineup, which also includes the AYANEO Flip KB, a clamshell style device that will feature a fully functional keyboard. This move represents AYANEO’s first venture into the realm of foldable Windows gaming handhelds with an integrated keyboard.

Even with the limited details on these devices, there’s a lot to love here, and the new systems could prove to be extremely popular entries in the AYANEO catalog. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for any additional information regarding the AYANEO Flip series and will provide further updates as soon as they become available.
