ASUS ROG Ally X Revealed: A Mid-Cycle Refresh with Significant Upgrades
Published Jun 3, 2024
ASUS has finally revealed the long-rumored ROG Ally X, an updated version of their popular Windows-based gaming handheld.
The latest model won’t be a full-fledged “ROG Ally 2,” but it will come packed with a number of enhancements that address some of the pain points with the original Ally.
Key Upgrades & Features
Enhanced Battery Life
The first ROG Ally was awesome, but its battery life was always a letdown. ASUS has stepped up its game and upgraded the ROG Ally X with a massive 80Wh battery that offers double the capacity of the original.
Increased Storage & Faster RAM
The ROG Ally X now comes equipped with 24GB of RAM, up from 16GB in the original model. On top of that, the device now includes a 1TB SSD out of the box, and the standard M.2 2280 form factor should make storage capacity upgrades easier and cheaper.
Refined Design & Ergonomics
Externally, the ROG Ally X has received a redesign with softer, more rounded edges and improved grips. The entire chassis has been updated, along with more accurate buttons and joysticks.
Improved Thermal Performance
ASUS has also overhauled the internal components to enhance thermal performance. The updated design incorporates improved fans and optimized heat distribution paths, ensuring that the device remains cool even during the most intense gaming sessions.
Connectivity Enhancements
Another welcome change is the fact that ASUS has replaced the XG Mobile port with dual USB Type-C ports, one of which offers Thunderbolt compatibility. This will provide more flexibility, allowing users to connect to third-party docks and eGPUs, without having to rely on the proprietary XG Mobile solution.
A Little Extra Weight
Even with all the upgrades, the ROG Ally X remains relatively lightweight, only adding 70 grams compared to the previous model. This small bump should be barely noticeable, ensuring the new version is still portable and easy to carry around.
The ASUS ROG Ally X is now available for pre-orders for $799, and the first batch will start shipping to customers on July 22.
