Distorted Figures: Paintings by Kim Byungkwan
Published Aug 20, 2024
South Korean artist Kim Byungkwan paints stunning portraits marked by defaced and distorted visuals, challenging audiences to engage in an aesthetic experience that transcends their usual perceptions.
Through his work, Kim explores the idea of “strangeness from familiarity,” seeking to disrupt the comfort of mundane visual experiences by tearing apart and reconstructing the familiar. In his own words:
“My work is trying to destroy, tear up, and reconstruct this habitual vision so that our vision can be expanded to other images.”
