Dimensional Paper Mandalas by Michael Velliquette
Published Nov 21, 2025
American artist Michael Velliquette continues to push the boundaries of paper as a sculptural medium with The Light That Sees, his latest solo exhibition at Duane Reed Gallery (on view through December 13, 2025). The show brings together 21 new monochromatic reliefs that explore consciousness, perception and the quiet, radiant presence of light.
Each piece is built through an astonishingly meticulous hand-cut process: layer upon layer of textured paper, assembled into mandalas, blooming suns, watchful eyes and abstracted landscapes. Entirely crafted by hand with no digital cutting or shortcuts, these works often take hundreds of hours to complete. Despite their clean monochrome palettes, Velliquette’s pieces feel anything but minimal. Every surface is packed with tiny perforations, tiered forms and spiraling motifs that echo symbols seen across cultures and eras.
The Light That Sees is currently on view at Duane Reed Gallery in St. Louis. You can explore more of Michael Velliquette’s incredible paper sculptures on his website and Instagram.
