Cultural Fusions: Illustrations by Duckie

Published Oct 14, 2024

Duckie is a Vietnamese illustrator based in Melbourne, Australia, who connects the past with the present through his vivid and imaginative creations. His work is heavily influenced by his cultural heritage, often featuring elements from Vietnamese folklore and traditions.

Growing up, he was captivated by the lively scenes of Vietnamese operas that he attended with his grandmother. The performers in their extravagant costumes left a lasting impression on him. This early fascination is evident in his work, where he recreates elements of these opulent garments using colourful, organic and graphic forms.

Duckie’s creative influences include James Jean, an artist he admires for his ability to incorporate Asian cultural elements into his work and J.C. Leyendecker for his mastery of figurative art. These influences are reflected in his own style, which is characterized by stylized characters and vibrant, contemporary icons of Vietnamese culture.
