Cryptic Colorations: Sculptures by Brit Bunkley
Published May 31, 2024
“Cryptic Colorations” is a series by New Zealand-based artist Brit Bunkley featuring 3D-printed sculptures of animals, each meticulously constructed from various segments or blocks in different colors.
The title “Cryptic Colorations” aptly captures the theme of the series. In nature, cryptic coloration refers to the ability of an organism to avoid detection by predators through camouflage. Brit’s work presents a twist on this concept by using conspicuous, contrasting colors that draw attention rather than deflect it. Each sculpture becomes a puzzle for the viewer, a combination of shapes and colors that resolves into the recognizable form of an animal, blending the familiar with the abstract.
