Corsario: A Variable Serif Crafted for Editorial Design

We’ve featured a few of Felix Braden’s typefaces over the years, and his latest release might be his most ambitious yet. Developed through his foundry Floodfonts over more than five years, Corsario is a variable serif family created specifically for magazines, publishing and editorial design.

Drawing from British Transitional, Scotch and Fatface styles of the 19th century, Corsario combines classical proportions with sharper contemporary details. Strong contrast, angular terminals, wedge-shaped serifs and distinctive hairlines give the typeface plenty of character at larger sizes, while flatter arch strokes and more open forms help maintain clarity in longer passages of text.

Flexibility is a major part of the family. Corsario spans nine weights from Thin to Black, each with corresponding italics, and three optical sizes designed for Headline, Text and Caption use. That adds up to 54 styles, while the variable version allows you to move continuously between weights and optical sizes within a single font file. Felix has also packed Corsario with alternate numeral styles, small caps, fractions, ligatures, mathematical symbols and broad European language support. The finished family is now available through Adobe Fonts, Font Bros and MyFonts.
