Concrete, Water and Silence Meet at Tadao Ando’s Chapel of Song
Published Jan 30, 2026
Tadao Ando’s latest work, The Chapel of Song, sits peacfully at the meeting point of two brooks in Heyuan, Guangdong, surrounded by forested hills. Completed in 2025, the 400-seat concrete auditorium marks the final chapter in Ando’s long-running Chapel Series. Rather than leaning on overt religious symbols, the building frames light, sound and landscape as its primary materials, setting up a space designed for reflection, music and shared experience.
The photographs shown here were captured by Catoptogram, an architectural photography and visualization studio. Their aerial views reveal the chapel’s triangular geometry anchored between water and land, while tightly composed interiors focus on circular voids and sharp planes. Movement and light guide the experience throughout, with exposed concrete surfaces catching daylight and stairs, ramps and railings defining clear, deliberate paths through the structure.
The Chapel of Song marks the closing chapter in Ando’s Chapel Series, following works like the Church of the Light and Church on the Water. The images captured by Catoptogram beautifully document the structure, showing how architecture and landscape are woven into a single composition.
