Childlike Wonder: Illustrations by Daniel Gray-Barnett
Published Apr 2, 2025
Daniel Gray-Barnett’s artistic journey isn’t one you hear every day. He started out studying Medical Science at the University of Sydney but eventually decided to swap lab coats for sketchbooks, finding illustration to be a far less life-or-death career.
A self-taught artist, Daniel mixes both traditional and digital methods to craft illustrations for various projects, including editorial pieces, books, advertising, and sometimes even animations. Through his rich, textured style and knack for narrative, he brings a delightful sense of wonder to his work, whether it’s for a children’s book or a though-provoking visual for a magazine.
His first book, Grandma Z, is a whimsical tale that earned him the Children’s Book Council of Australia award for Best New Illustrator. The book also found its way into prominent spaces like the Society of Illustrators’ Original Art Shows and the International Youth Library’s White Ravens list.
