Brushstrokes in Time: David Ambarzumjan’s Painted Collisions of Past and Future
Published May 4, 2026
David Ambarzumjan’s Brushstrokes in Time series turns a single act into a rupture. He starts with a recognizable scene, like a city street in the rain, a desert at dusk or a cobblestone bridge at dawn, then tears it open. A thick, sculptural swipe of oil paint cuts across each piece, revealing an alternate reality embedded within it. The brushstroke itself becomes a fracture, working both as a visible trace of the artist’s hand and a break in the fabric of time.
According to David, the series explores “how unpredictable, beautiful and ruthless nature can be and how humanity has influenced it over time.” Each painting carries that tension, holding opposing states in the same space and asking what connects them, and what happens when they overlap.
