Bizarre Contraptions: Art Installations by Di Tian

Published Apr 30, 2024

New York-based new media artist Di Tian combines art and technology to create peculiar interactive installations. His thought-provoking works delve deep into the impact of technology on human life, questioning our perceptions of existence, identity and autonomy.

One of his most intriguing creations is “Aurora II,” an interactive installation that reflects on the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence. Featuring a reciprocating machine adorned with silica gel hands, a computer keyboard, and a monitor, the strange contraption responds to motion, bringing to life its artificial hands.

Another piece, “Mother / Father,” takes a more poignant turn, exploring the themes of mortality and the inevitable decay of the human body. Through the use of 20 customized telescopic devices that mimic the breathing of a dying person on a sickbed, Di Tian brings an intimate and somber reality into the gallery space.
