Between Places: Minimalist Travel Photography by Jacob Howard

New Zealand-based photographer and art director Jacob Howard approaches travel with a curiosity for the unknown, turning unfamiliar landscapes into carefully composed studies of place. The images featured here come from his Atlas Obscure, The Land Between the Seas and The In-Between series, photographed while traveling through Morocco, Egypt and Jordan.

Jacob’s minimalist compositions often isolate a single subject within its surroundings: an unfinished building standing alone in the desert, a weathered bus beside an empty road, a covered car, an abandoned football goal or a solitary figure moving through the frame. Expanses of sky and barren terrain create generous areas of negative space, while muted earth tones are punctuated by unexpected flashes of red, green, pink and blue.

Running throughout these projects is an interest in transition and liminal spaces, those moments and places that sit somewhere between what was and what comes next. Rather than searching for specific subjects, Jacob allows enigmatic structures and unexpected encounters to emerge naturally through his journeys.
