Between Memory & Imagination: The Surreal Collages of Maggie Taylor
Published Jan 14, 2026
Florida-based artist Maggie Taylor creates carefully staged and beautifully uncanny surreal scenes. Her images are crafted like visual puzzles, where floating cities, costumed animals, children, clouds and everyday objects drift through soft, pastel-toned spaces. You might have seen her work before without realizing it, as her imagery was brought to life in the opening titles for the TV series Ghost Whisperer.
Maggie is a collage artist who approaches her practice with a still-life mindset. She begins with small pastel drawings to establish mood and atmosphere, then scans, layers and assembles photographic elements using Photoshop. Drawing from 19th-century photographs, taxidermy specimens, mounted insects, vintage toys, feathers and found objects, she slices and rebuilds each composition digitally with meticulous control.
That mix of old and new runs through everything she makes. Classical references, domestic interiors and childhood symbols are reassembled into scenes that encourage slow looking and open-ended interpretation. Her work resists fixed narratives, instead offering quiet moments where imagination, memory and curiosity intersect.
