Absurd Characters & Colorful Costumes by Gerwyn Davies
Published Jan 23, 2026
Australian photographer Gerwyn Davies creates surreal characters that feel half-costume, half-creature. Wrapped in inflated forms, sequins, fur and stacked synthetic shapes, his figures stand isolated in deserts, beaches, suburban streets and empty pools. Faces disappear, bodies become awkward silhouettes, and scale is pushed just far enough to tip each image into absurdity.
The work feels like an ongoing series of visual self-projections. Each character exists inside its own carefully staged environment, lit with crisp clarity and saturated color. Gerwyn pairs exaggerated costumes with familiar locations, using that contrast to heighten the sense of artificiality and restraint.
In his hands, costume becomes architecture. Bulky, impractical forms restrict movement and erase identity, turning the human body into a sculptural support structure. His mesmerizing images feel absurd, carefully composed and slightly unsettling in all the right ways.
