A Whisper in the Eye of the Storm: An Immersive Optical Art Installation
Published Nov 22, 2024
Deep within the cedar forests of Omachi, Japan, A Whisper in the Eye of the Storm is a captivating art installation crafted from 14,000 prescription lenses. Created by Canadian artists Caitlind r.c. Brown and Wayne Garrett for the Northern Alps Art Festival, this stunning artwork is a shimmering “rainstorm” of cascading optics.
Located near the shores of Lake Kizaki, this installation taps into the area’s deep connection with water, seen by locals as a source of life and historical symbol of power. Visitors step into the piece through a curtain of lenses, each one suspended on delicate chains like droplets frozen in mid-air. Following a circular path through the artwork, they discover layers of textural distortion and shifting light. At the center, a circular bench invites them to pause and appreciate the beauty of the landscape reframed by this mesmerizing optical artwork.
