A Living Identity for the Amazon by FutureBrand

For a territory that covers 60% of Brazil, hosts 28 million people, and contains the largest tropical rainforest on Earth, it’s remarkable that the Brazilian Legal Amazon has never had a unified brand identity, until now. Created by FutureBrand São Paulo in partnership with RAI (Integrated Amazon Routes) and Embratur, the new Amazônia identity is one of the most ambitious place-branding projects to emerge from South America in years.

The star of the show is a logotype traced directly from satellite imagery of the Amazon River basin. Each letter is drawn from the natural meanders of the region’s waterways, mapped to real GPS coordinates across the nine states.

From there, the system expands outward. Regional illustrators Cristo, Winy Tapajós, Malu Menezes and Beatriz Belo interpreted the logotype through the lens of their home states, layering it with local flora, fauna and cultural iconography. A secondary typeface, crafted from lettering photographed on Amazonian streets and markets, grounds the system in the region’s vernacular. A “Feito de Amazônia” (Made of Amazon) seal extends the identity into product certification for local producers and artisans.

It’s a rare example of place branding that draws its visual logic from the territory itself, rather than imposing one onto it.
