Swedish 3D artist Mikael Eidenberg treats the Leica IIIf as a sculptural piece of art in this meticulous digital tribute. Originally produced between 1950 and 1957, the compact 35mm screw-mount rangefinder is still a benchmark for precision engineering and restrained industrial design. Mikael’s project studies every dial, engraving and surface, rebuilding the camera piece by piece in Cinema 4D before rendering it in striking detail.
Most of the images featured here come from a recent Redshift update of the project, where he used controlled lighting and high contrast setups to emphasize the brushed metal top plate, the textured leatherette wrap and the fine typography engraved into the body. Close-up shots highlight the shutter speed dial, the lens markings and the subtle scuffs and scratches that give the renders a convincing sense of wear. The final couple of renders date back to the original 2019 version, created in Vray, offering a clear comparison between workflows and showing how the project has evolved technically over time.
Mikael’s personal study of his Leica IIIf shows an impressive level of discipline and craft. It is both a tribute to a mid-century engineering icon and a focused showcase of his skills. For more of his digital creations, visit his website.
