A Deep South Story: A Cinematic Photo Series by Dan Lior
Published Sep 8, 2025
Brooklyn-based photographer and director Dan Lior captures the haunting beauty of the American South in his ongoing project, A Deep South Story. We’re taking a look at two chapters from the series: Crosses and Swallowed by Fog.
In Crosses, Dan documents weathered symbols scattered across churches, forests and forgotten roads. Each cross serves as both a testament to devotion and a reminder of the South’s complicated history of faith, oppression, and resilience. Swallowed by Fog shifts to misty roads and decaying structures where the air itself feels heavy with memory. Here, the fog is less a veil and more a lingering presence, blurring the line between past and present.
Through his cinematic lens, Dan Lior transforms the Deep South into a place where stories of endurance, spirituality, and time itself are etched into the land. You can explore more from A Deep South Story on his website and Behance.
