Shaping a Sustainable Future: Smart & Innovative Design Solutions by Layer

London-based design studio Layer is rethinking the way we approach sustainability, blending creativity with a solid eco-friendly focus. In this feature, we’re highlighting three of their projects that show how sustainable design can be not only functional and beautiful but also make a real difference.

First up is Collect, a portable rainwater harvesting system designed with MDF Italia and Kvadrat. Using a unique textile surface to gather rain, the droplets are filtered through natural ceramic and carbon layers, ensuring every drop is safe to use. Next is Host, a modular beehive that helps support urban biodiversity, developed for Spanish furniture brand Andreu World. Featuring a stackable, weatherproof design made from insulating materials, Host creates a haven for bees in busy cityscapes. Finally, there’s Light, an algae bio-fuel lamp created in collaboration with Muuto. Powered by algae biofuel, a renewable resource, it offers a steady glow when you need it most. Combining sustainability with poetic simplicity, it reimagines fire as a source of modern calm and strength when other forms of power fail.
