On the northern coast of Norway, where the rocky landscape meets the open Atlantic, a new cultural landmark is slowly emerging from the terrain. Designed by Danish architect Dorte Mandrup, The Whale is being built in Andenes on the island of Andøya, north of the Arctic Circle.

“The Whale tells the story of the big inhabitants of this underwater world, rising as a soft hill on the rocky shore, as if a giant had lifted a thin layer of the crust of the earth and created a cavity underneath.”

Scheduled to open in June 2027, the project is conceived as a knowledge and experience centre dedicated to whales, the ocean and the ecosystems they inhabit.

The location is central to the architecture. Andenes sits beside Bleiksdjupa, a deep-sea canyon that brings marine life unusually close to the coast and has made the area an important destination for whale watching.

The Whale takes the form of a low, sweeping structure that rises gently from the rocky ground. Its most distinctive feature is the large parabolic roof, that looks like a whale’s back diving back into the ocean.

The building’s foundation likewise follows the landscape beneath it, allowing the structure to become an extension of the land rather than an building placed upon it.

The roof will be covered with natural, unworked stone sourced from the area. As the material ages and weathers, the intention is for the construction to become increasingly connected to its surroundings.

Its parabolic geometry allows the roof structure to span a large interior space with minimal support. According to the project description, the curved concrete shell transfers forces towards three support points, creating a large column-free room while reducing material use. The aerodynamic form also helps minimize snow accumulation, an important consideration in the Arctic climate.

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of The Whale is that the architecture does not end at the walls. The roof itself becomes part of the public experience. Visitors will be able to walk across its surface, turning the building into a viewing platform overlooking the Norwegian Sea and the surrounding archipelago. From this elevated position, the architecture offers a changing relationship with the landscape, from the ocean and mountains to the midnight sun and northern lights.

Beneath the curved roof, The Whale will contain exhibition spaces, offices, a café and a store. Large glazed openings face the archipelago, keeping the surrounding landscape visible from within the building. Rather than isolating visitors from the environment, the architecture makes the ocean and coastline an active part of the experience.

The exhibition programme is being developed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates and will bring together science, art, storytelling and sound. The focus extends beyond whale biology to evolution, behavior, ecology and the broader condition of the world’s oceans. The Whale becomes a way of understanding a much larger marine ecosystem and the importance of its conservation.

When it opens next summer, its ambition will extend beyond creating another destination on Norway’s northern coast. It proposes a different kind of museum architecture, one where the subject of the exhibition is not confined to the gallery.
