Every so often a product shows up on my desk that makes me stop and just… stare at it for a while. The Lofree Hyzen is one of those products. It’s a keyboard that looks like it fell out of a hi-fi amplifier catalog, types like a proper mechanical board, and games like a magnetic one. I know it sounds too good to be true, but somehow it all works.

Lofree has never been afraid to make keyboards that look different, but the Hyzen might be their boldest creation yet. It’s chunky, angular and industrial, and it’s developed around an innovative piece of switch tech that Lofree calls Nexus (co-developed with Kailh), which combines a real mechanical leaf with magnetic (TMR) sensing in the same switch.

The premium experience starts with the unboxing. The Hyzen comes in a unique pill-shaped hard case lined with soft fabric, which is a nice touch for a keyboard at this price point. It feels more like unboxing an expensive camera lens than an everyday peripheral. Design & Build Quality

This might be the best-looking keyboard I’ve ever had on my desk. Lofree describes the design language as architectural, and that makes sense. The Hyzen is all sharp, with straight lines and flat planes, CNC-milled from a single block of aluminum with zero flex, creaking, or hollow spots anywhere on the chassis. It’s really dense in a way that feels expensive the second you pick it up.

I’m probably not alone thinking this looks like a Cybertruck, and I get why the angular, raw metal look isn’t going to be everyone’s taste. But in person, it feels less like a “post-apocalyptic truck” and more like a boutique audio component. That’s helped a lot by the two physical knobs up top (one for volume, one for connectivity mode switching), which feel substantial and tactile in a way that on-screen or shortcut-based controls just can’t replicate. I’d take a satisfying clicky dial over a key combo any day.

No one seems to be talking about that extra set of translucent red keycaps, but it’s worth calling out. Swap them in and the whole board leans hard into a cyberpunk, Neuromancer-hacker aesthetic. It’s a lot, and it won’t be for everyone, but I’ve been popping them on every now and then just to switch things up.

The one thing this design is missing is adjustable feet, with the typing angle fixed at 12 degrees. I didn’t personally find this uncomfortable at all during four weeks of daily use, but if you’re particular about tweaking your angle, you’re out of luck here.

One quirk worth flagging is the position of the USB-C charging port, which sits recessed on the back right corner, directly below the volume and connectivity mode knobs. I don’t mind the placement myself, but I know plenty of people prefer a more central spot at the rear. That said, because it sits so deep, you can’t easily plug the cable in blindly. You’ll need to lift and flip the board every time it needs a charge.

Typing Feel & Sound

In mechanical mode, this is one of the most satisfying keyboards I’ve typed on in a while. The sound is deep and creamy without any of the hollow pinginess that plagues a lot of boards. I mentioned in my Epomaker Galaxy100 Lite review that my wife isn’t usually a fan of loud mechanical keyboards. She absolutely loves the sound of this one, which says a lot.

The tactile bump from the Nexus switch’s metal leaf is there, though it’s on the subtle side. This isn’t going to satisfy anyone chasing a big, pronounced Cherry MX Brown-style tactile event. Think of it more as a gentle acknowledgment that a keystroke happened, layered under a very pleasant sound profile.

The 65% Layout & That F-Row Toggle

A 65% layout is a tough sell for a lot of people because it usually means giving up your function row entirely. Lofree’s solution is a physical knob on the left side that toggles the top row between numbers and function keys, with LED indicators lighting up to confirm which mode you’re in. Hold Fn at any time and you get the function row temporarily, with the LED labels displaying up top, regardless of the toggle position.

With the toggle switched on, pressing Fn shows you the available shortcuts like brightness and media controls. It’s a clever workaround for its compact size, but personally I would have loved to see this board in a 75% layout instead. This sharp design language with a permanent function row would be about as close to my perfect keyboard as I can imagine.

Lighting

I’ll admit that I’ve never been the biggest fan of RGB lighting on keyboards, but the Hyzen might have changed my mind. Between the backlighting that shines through the translucent keycaps and the full-width ambient light bar running along the front edge, the overall effect is modern and classy, not tacky. That front strip casts a nice diffused glow across the desk without screaming for attention, and you can easily adjust the brightness to your liking via Lofree’s web-based software.

Lofree Hub runs entirely in the browser at hyzen.lofree.tech, so there’s no app to install. It’s easy to use and packed with features. You can create up to 7 different profiles and set their primary mode (mechanical or magnetic). Each profile has its own color, indicated by a small light between the Fn and left arrow keys, which briefly lights up when switching profiles so you can confirm which one you’ve selected.

You can also access a ton of settings like per-key actuation adjustment, rapid trigger, dynamic keystrokes, SOCD, full remapping and macros, polling rate settings, two-stage sleep/power management, lighting customization for both zones and the dongle, magnetic mode recalibration, and firmware updates. It covers everything a keyboard enthusiast could possibly want, and I never ran into anything that felt glitchy or broken.

Gaming Performance

Switching between the mechanical mode for everyday use and magnetic mode for gaming is pretty straightforward. You can cycle between your pre-configured profiles using the Fn + Enter shortcut (or via the web driver). Flip into a magnetic mode profile and the Hyzen turns into a serious competitive board. Actuation is adjustable down to 0.01mm, rapid trigger, DKS, and SOCD all work exactly as advertised, and running the 2.4GHz dongle at 8K polling felt every bit as snappy and responsive as Lofree claims.

The front light bar seems to be the biggest drain, as turning it off while keeping the key backlighting on extended battery life considerably.

The Lofree Hyzen is one of the most interesting keyboards I’ve tested in a long time, not just because it looks incredible sitting on a desk, but because the hybrid switch tech isn’t just a gimmick, it really works. Between the bold industrial design, the clever F-row solution, the elegant RGB implementation, and a hefty battery, it’s easy to see why this Kickstarter campaign took off.

It’s certainly not perfect though. The fixed typing angle is limiting, and $279–$299 is a serious ask for a 65% board, no matter how good it looks. But if you’ve been waiting for a keyboard that doesn’t force you to choose between mechanical feel and magnetic speed, the Hyzen is the first one that’s actually pulled it off, and it’s well worth a look.
