Project Suhrkamp by Hagen Verleger
Published Dec 3, 2013
Beautiful self-initiated project by Hagen Verleger, a Berlin-based graphic designer. Hagen explains the idea behind the project:
“Inspired by two of my favourite publishing houses, Suhrkamp and Insel, I started to redesign some of their book series, including: Suhrkamp Taschenbuch, Suhrkamp Basisbibliothek, Edition Suhrkamp digital and Insel Taschenbuch Liebesgedichte.
On the one hand, the new designs are an obvious bow to the iconic covers Willy Fleckhaus and Rolf Staudt created for Suhrkamp — some of which have, alas, been discontinued in recent years. And on the other hand, they are questioning contemporary profit-driven paradigms in book cover design by abolishing all imagery—and replacing it with content-related colour schemes and patterns, or even with the book’s actual first page of text set on the cover. Finally, a reinterpretation of Suhrkamp’s and Insel’s logos completes the picture.”
