Monochrome Artworks by Pierre Barraud de Lagerie

French artist Pierre Barraud de Lagerie creates interesting monochrome pieces characterized by simple geometric compositions of seemingly desolate architectural structures.

Pierre’s unique style and technique is inspired by a nostalgia for early computer graphics. Initially overwhelmed by the myriad possibilities offered by modern software, he sought a simpler tool that wouldn’t just mimic the analog drawing experience. This led him to reminisce about the now obsolete MacPaint, a software he used as a child, known for its monochrome aesthetic. In his words:

“When I tried to get started with digital drawing tools, I encountered a difficulty due to the infinite possibilities of software, I was looking for a very simple and immediate tool. Furthermore, I didn’t want a tool that imitated or emulated the sensations of a real brush and the effects of analog drawing.”

His exploration led him to other variants of the software such as MsPaint, JsPaint and Paint Brush. The “Spray” tool included in these programs allowed Pierre to engage with black pixels in a way similar to his usual scraping technique.

“The main use I initially made of this tool was to allow me to improvise and create ideas much more quickly than if I had to do it analogically. Over time, this practice has gone beyond the sketch stage to become works in their own right. Slowly, I question my relationship with digital technology through one of its most outdated tools.”
