Guest Post: Illustrations by Jonas Bergstrand

Published Jul 26, 2011

This is a very special guest post! Today’s inspiration comes as a “double feature” from the one and only, Stanley Chow. We have just featured Stan’s work in our previous post (check it out!) and now it’s his turn to feature someone that inspires him. Stan’s choice was Jonas Bergstrand, a fantastic Swedish illustrator and graphic designer. Here’s what he had to say about Jonas:

“Jonas Bergstrand is a bonafide genius… he can draw, design, illustrate anything… with style and panache. Being Swedish you can tell he is obviously influenced by the great Swedish graphic designers and illustrators of the 50’s and 60’s like Olle Eksell, Staffan Wiren, Martin Gavler to name a few. Though Jonas’s work is very ‘retro’ in style, it still remains fresh and modern and it has a twist which is unique only to Jonas. He has every skill in his locker that a visual artist needs… photography, photo-montage, cartoons, caricatures, typography, animation, graphic design. He’s one of the few illustrator/designers where you can throw anything at, and he will come up with the goods!

I am fortunate enough to be on the same agency as him, The Central Illustration Agency in London. When I first joined the agency 12 years ago, Jonas was already quite well established… he instantly affected the way I approached illustration. I was primarily a painter, but after seeing Jonas’s work I knew I had to move into the digital age. Whilst I was learning how to use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, i was also luckily enough work with him on a job… here I saw his work first-hand. I can’t tell you how much I learned from that experience.

It’s also amazing how his work has developed over the years… he is constantly still pushing himself in every direction possible.. he’s mixing digital techniques, with photography and cut out paper with mind blowing results. You can tell he’s an absolute workaholic with the sheer volume of work I see him come out with, year in year out.

Jonas has by far influenced me more than any other artist I know… though I think he has easily surpassed his influences in greatness, I can confidently say I won’t even come close to him.”
